Wine on Keto

Wine on keto? Yes! you can definitely have wine while on a keto diet. I was never a huge fan of wine until I started the keto diet. Back in the day I would drink Moscato and sweet red wines, which is pretty much alcoholic juice. I could not stand the taste of dry wines, until my pallet changed. The past year or so Lauren and I have been really into tasting different types of wine. National Wine Day is on May 25, 2019.

Happy National Wine Day!

Yes you can drink wine!

Some people may say that all wine tastes the same, but I highly disagree. When we started to taste different types of wine and really learned about wine, I learned to taste the different flavors in wine. The same thing happened with beer, and I don’t mean the low carb beers, I am talking about craft beer. I am a huge fan of craft beer. Now it isn’t low carb but sometimes we will indulge. Next time you have a glass of wine try plugging one nostril and sniff the wine and then do the opposite side and it will smell different! Weird I know but just give it a try. Always smell your wine.

If you haven’t been to a wine tasting I highly recommend it. Learning about wine and the different flavors can be so much fun. Plus you can eat cheese with wine, umm yum! Next time you go to the store to get some wine read the descriptions and try different kinds.

Cabernet Sauvignon Wine!

Cabernet Sauvignon is our favorite in this household. A little history on this type of wine is it comes from the seventeenth century in the southwestern part of France. This wine was invented by breeding a red Cabernet Franc grape plant and a white Sauvignon Blanc grape plant. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in a wide verity of places and is one of the most popular wines know today.

Wine can fit into a low carb diet.

Carbs in Wine

Alcohol on keto can definitely kick you out of ketosis, but it will only be while your body is working on the alcohol you have consumed. As long as you are sticking to the unsweetened and dry alcohols you will be fine and won’t have a double hangover the next day. If you are sticking to the dryer wines then you will be having about 2-5g of carbs per 5ozs, which isn’t that bad. Just try not to drink the whole bottle, but you do you boo! 😉

The types of wines I recommend sticking to are:

Reds – Cabernet (3.8 carbs), Pinot Noir (3.4), Merlot (3.7), Zinfandel (2.4), and Syrah (3.8)

Whites – Chardonnay (3.1), Pinot Grigio (3), Pino Blanc (2.85), Brut Cava (2.8), Sparkling White Wine (1.5), and Albarino (3.5)

Other drinks you may like that we have on the blog:

While you are indulging in all of the fancy, delicious wines have some cheese with it! The best thing to have with your glass of wine is a charcuterie board. Load it up with tons of different cheeses, meats, olives, berries, vegetables, and cheese crackers. We are going to our local Wine Festival this weekend to indulge in all of the delicious locals wines we have here in New Mexico. Are you going to any Wine Festivals this summer?

Get your Electrolytes in!

Electrolytes are very important on the keto diet especially when drinking. There are lots of different electrolyte powders out there, but I like to make my own. The electrolyte drink I make every day contains: a couple pinches of pink salt, 1/2 tsp of potassium (we use no-salt brand) and a MIO flavor. I also like to take a magnesium supplement everyday.
