Wisconsin Beer Brats

The best time of the year to grill is in the summer. I have the perfect summer grilling recipe for you! If you didn’t grow up in the mid west, then this way of making bratwurst may be new to you. I promise this is the best way to make them.

These Wisconsin Beer Brats are absolutely delicious! When boiling the brats in beer then crisping them up on the grill makes them juicy and crispy.

What is the best grill?

Honestly any grill works! All you need to do is take care of it by cleaning before and after ever use. We prefer a charcoal grill and never use a gas grill. This is just a personal preference, but you can use any type you prefer.

For years we had a large charcoal grill that I don’t even recall. We just recently purchased this amazing small but mighty Weber grill. Of course it is charcoal and we love it.

How to Make Beer Brats?

It is super easy and makes a delicious lunch or dinner. The best part is that you won’t need to eat up the house with the oven. Which is perfect during the summer. Here are the steps on how to make these brats. The full list of ingredients and instructions are in the recipe post below.

  • First light up the grill and add enough charcoal for a high heat and light it. If using a gas grill set it to a high temp.
  • Add the brats to a large stove pot and add in the beer then put on the stove on medium high.
  • Prep the onions: peel the skin off of the onions and cut into quarters.
  • Add each quarter into a square of foil (enough to cover the whole onion) and drizzle olive oil over the onion and sprinkle salt and garlic powder over the onion then wrap it up in the foil. Repeat to each quarter.
  • Place on the grill and leave room for the brats. They need to be grilled for a long time until the onions are translucent. Flip periodically.
  • Let the brats boil for about 10 minutes then poke holes in each brat with a fork and then boil for another 10-15 minutes.
  • Once done use grill tongs to carefully transfer the beer boiled brats directly to the grill and cook 2-3 minutes on each side. The internal temp needs to be about 160 degrees F.
  • Serve on a low carb bun or lettuce and top with the onions and any condiments you prefer.

Grilling Season!

Grilling season is my favorite time of year. We love to light up the grill and cooking delicious meats up for dinner and the week. We will grill any time of year to be honest. Grilling is Lauren’s favorite way to cook, which means it is mine since I don’t have to make dinner!

We normally will grill on Sunday and cook enough for the week. It is so nice to have our protein prepped for the week and if your not meal prepping your meat I highly suggest it!
